Frequently asked questions
Does my child need an Apple ID?
Yes. MathNet uses your family’s iCloud account for sync across devices. Apple’s Family Sharing is the cleanest setup for younger students — each child has their own Apple ID (Apple’s term for a Family-Sharing-managed under-13 account), and you can manage screen time and content restrictions centrally.
Does MathNet work offline?
Yes. All practice works fully offline. Sync resumes automatically when the device reconnects to the internet. The optional reward webhook needs connectivity at the moment you tap Redeem.
Can I disable the reward system?
It’s disabled by default. If you’ve turned it on and want it off, open Settings (admin password required) and toggle Enable reward system off. The points and credits balance is preserved but no UI for it appears, and the webhook never fires.
Can I set different settings for different students?
Not currently — each device shares one set of settings via iCloud. The most common pattern is each student has their own Apple ID via Family Sharing, which gives each student their own MathNet instance with their own settings, proficiency progression, and reward configuration.
Proficiency feels too easy / too hard
Each problem type uses a rolling 30-result window to compute its level. If a student is stuck on a type and getting consistent wrong answers, lowering the difficulty knobs for that category in Settings can help. Conversely, the “quick competence shortcut” (3 fast-and-correct answers in a row) lets advanced students skip the rolling-window grind.
The cloud icon turned red
The cloud icon goes red when MathNet can’t reach iCloud. It usually recovers on its own once connectivity returns. If it stays red:
- Check that you’re signed into iCloud in iOS Settings
- Check that iCloud Drive is enabled
- Check that MathNet is allowed to use iCloud (iOS Settings → [your name] → iCloud → Apps Using iCloud)
- Force-quit and reopen the app
If none of those help, see the contact section below.
The Redeem button is greyed out
The Redeem button is disabled when:
- You have zero credits
- You haven’t configured a webhook URL in Settings
- The configured webhook URL isn’t reachable (DNS failure, 5xx response, timeout)
The Bank view’s status line tells you which case applies. Tap Retry to re-probe the webhook, or open Settings to fix the URL.
I forgot the admin password
Admin password recovery is intentionally not built in — the password protects access to sensitive settings, so a recovery path would be a back door. If you’ve forgotten it, delete and reinstall the app. Your iCloud-synced practice data will be preserved, but you’ll need to reconfigure the admin password and webhook URL.
Why is the App Store version so simple compared to other math apps?
MathNet is opinionated: most math apps optimize for “engagement” (gamified pressure, character upgrades, ad views). MathNet optimizes for finishing a session feeling like you accomplished something real. The reward system delegates the “fun stuff” to your home automation — so the app itself can stay focused on math.
